Confidence is Key
I really wanted to blog, but honestly have nothing to talk about. Ridiculously long rant about how I dislike my bff's bf? - repeated too much, my stressful course load? - counter productive. My day? - not that interesting. Thus, instead of the normal beauty, hair, nails, shopping stuff I talk about (i'm not a beauty blog by all means, it's just i'm a girl and its a big part of my leisure life) I wanted to write about something well basically deeper. I thought today I would write about what confidence is to me. At first I thought I would talk about what beauty is, but honestly I have no clue.
It takes confidence to fake confidence
In high-school, I was really good at faking confidence. I was in students' council for 3 years - the last being president. And well, they make you do a speech in front of the whole school. I may looked calm and composed, but i'm freaking out on the inside! usually, the last thing I tell myself before I go on stage is something corny like "you're awesome!" But slowly i'm realizing my ability to 'fake' my confidence, stemmed from confidence which was built by the support of friends, family and teachers.
Stick up for yourself?
Many people think that if someone have confidence, they will stick up for themselves. However, I think true confidence also includes the ability to not allow others to affect you. Know that you are beautiful, intelligent, brave but don't steep to the level of some to prove it.
"this above all, to thy own-self be true"
My favourite quote from Polonius to Laertes. Know your flaws. It's okay to not be able to play the piano, or speak a foreign language, or even have a funny nose. It's part of what makes us who we are. A very wise teacher once told me (well technically she was addressing the class) - if you can't laugh at yourself, everyone else will - meaning that if you can accept your flaws, no one is allowed to criticize you.
Have a lovely weekend!

January Favourites & Disappointments
Mutual!
Everyone lately seems to be in a craze for the Revlon lip butter. It sells for around 7$ in the states but here in Canada it sells for 10$. I think it should go down once the hype ends as the states released it first they probably predicted people will be hunting for it so raised our prices here. Anyhow, i managed to get 2, one of which i gave my friend as part of her birthday present because i know she's been searching for them. They are well pigmented and feel really nice on my lips, but the downside was the price. So for that reason i give it a mutual meaning you should try it out but wait until the prices drop! One hint though, go to the store and actually play with the colours before purchasing it. Many pictures don't quite reflect how the colours actually look!
Favourites!
1. NYC concealer
i've gone through like 4 tubes of these but i like them quite honestly for their price. If you're Canadian, you can only get them from london drugs in the west. But for the price it's pretty good coverage, and it's so cheap that i can replace it or chop off a chunk of it which i do when i'm breaking out or after a breakout to minimize the bacteria.
2. NYC nail polish in China Town
Ever since my OPI's Lincon Park After Dark has dried out I've been searching for a good purple. Why don't I just buy another bottle of OPI you may ask? Well have you seen the price? for 2-3$ I found a nice alternative. It takes an extra coat so many people will argue that it evens out the price at the end, but i never use up an entire bottle of nail polish anyways, so it's a win-win situation.
3. Bath and Body Works SALE!
Bath and Body Works, for those of you who have lived under a rock is on a massive sale. It's calmed down a lot now, but there's still some really good deal! I got a bottle of body mist from their signature fragrance collection called Paris Amour. All body mist from the signature fragrance collection's 5$ so go check it out! There's also some awesome travel size body butter for 1$.
Disappointments
1. Sore throats!
i'm sick =[
2. eyeshadows
I've been having the hardest time trying to find a good golden eyeshadow. I've been using annabelle's gleam, but they're out of stock for the moment. I find that a lot of brands assume that people wear really dramatic colours.
3. boots!
I've been shopping for boots for like the entire winter season. It's so hard to find a good pair right now, especially since the vent circumferences are really small in most stores right now!
Hope you enjoyed my january favourites and disappointments! Happy shopping!

Sale vs Value
Hi Everyone!
Almost everyone has been sucked in by sales, but are you really getting a good deal? Well one thing that always pops into my head is, how much does it actually costs to make it? For example, I went to bath and body works and picked up lots of great products (they smell and feel awesome) on sale, prices ranging from $1- $8. However, if their able to sell it to you for 75% + off, how much is the product actually worth? There must be an incredible mark up for them to be able to discount it at such a great rate, and still manage to keep their company afloat. Just some thought as we wind down from the boxing day/week/month sales.

Umm...I Like Payless Again?
Oh Payless...I remember every september my parents used to bring me to pick out new shoes. But as I grew up, we went our separate ways.
The other day I passed by and their stuff really isn't half bad...and quite affordable. Here are a few that i picked up from their site, although I couldn't find the pair of nice brown leather boots which renewed my confidence in them.
Women's Aidan Lace Oxford Flat $23
Women's Sawyer Tall Boot $50
Women's Komet Platform Pump $30
Maybe (just maybe) I should start shopping there again.

New Years Resolution 2012
Hi Everyone!
It's a New Year and time to make that list of resolutions. Here are my resolutions for this year:
1. 4.0 GPA
This term i had a 3.7 GPA and i think it would be awesome if i could boost it to a 4.0, and something that will not only help me academically (obviously) but a confidence booster.
2. Sew More
Having taken 3 years of design, I have an abundant of equipments thanks to my supportive parents. However, after my program ended I think I have abandoned it except for minor alterations. This year I think it is time to return to sewing as a stress reliever (although it may create more stress) and a hobby.
3. Worry Less
I am slightly paranoid. Whenever something goes wrong it is extremely difficult for me not to rant about it a hundred times, or think about it repetitively in my head. A lot of times it's situations I can't do anything about, but I can't help but worry. This year I want to worry less.
4. Find a Possible Career
This year I think I really want to focus on the future. Perhaps I will Finally make an appointment with an academic advisor to talk about future careers, or perhaps I will find it on my own.
5. Make More Friends
I have a few very very close friends, and a lot of friends in general, but very few from my university. It's not that i'm anti-social, but i find it a bit hard when I am not in dorm, and the profs talk so much! Hopefully this year I will have the chance to meet a few new friends.
6. Make Time to Work Out and Volunteer
I am generally quite productive, however, I still find that I don't have time volunteer or do any sorts of physical exercise. This year I want to try to make time, or take advantage of any small gaps to do so.
7. Wear Less Make-Up
A lot of times, even when i'm running late, I still feel the need to spend time on my make-up. I should probably worry less about how I look (ref. 3)
8. Wear That Outfit
My closet is awesome, I just don't wear it. I have to admit, I have a few items in my closet that I love, but never find the time, place, weather to wear it. This year, I will do that!
What are your New Years Resolution???

Receipt Box
Hi everyone!
Amongst all the boxing day shopping and savings, it's easy to get all jumbled up on your budget! That's why I started a receipt box! Basically I put all my receipts into this box so that I can always go back and check which card I bought what with, or if you need something returned. I also started it to see how much I spend on retail (clothes, jewellery, shoes, and makeup) in a year. I thought it would be kind of fun to calculate it at the end of the year. Also, I find that it helps you control your spending as you have a box of reminders of your recent purchases.
A nice way to encourage yourself to get into the habit is to get a cute box. Mine has colourful stripes on it, and it looks really cute that I kind of don't mind putting my receipts in it.
You can also try putting a divider like a big piece of paper to layer it so that you can have a monthly order. It's always a good idea to check your credit card statements at the end of the month.
Happy Shopping!

December Favourites and Disappointments!
Hi everyone!
Hope everyone's holiday is going well. At first I was going to do a December favourites, but I thought that it was also important to talk about stuff that I thought didn't live up the the hype! Maybe I will do this every month, or perhaps not but here are my december favourites and disappointments!
Favourites!
1. Goody Spin Pin
First I need to put a huge disclaimer that this product, while i love it is really expensive. It's $7 for 2 pins which I think is very over priced, considered how much material is actually there. I think if they had packaged it with 4 pins instead of 2, I would be a lot more satisfied, but come on for 2 pins? HOWEVER! I heard about this product a lot so when my local drugstore (london drugs) had it in stock (FINALLY) I decided to just go for it as a little treat to myself! Ever since i've been playing with it all the time! If you are in situations where you often need to put your hair in a bun, or just like the cute side bun look I definitely recommend this! It works! It looks a bit weird, and my boyfriend agrees, but it actually holds quite well, better than an elastic! I did get my hair stuff in it once, but that was partially my fault, and it did eventually come out!
2. Christmas Surprises!
So I need to recommend everyone who get sick of mushy coupley moments to skip this part, but it's basically my first christmas with my bf of 9 months. I actually think how long you've gone out with someone is a big factor to how much money to spend on them. Anyways! So my bf gave me this heart studded Swarovski necklace with details on both sides of the heart (I couldn't find a picture of the other side). It's funny because I was worried he would get me something from Tiffany's & Co because I wanted to go to the grand opening and for a bit I was worried he thought I was trying to hint at something, which I totally wasn't because let's face it, while sparkly it is expensive beyond a university student's funds (refer to dislike #2). He put it in box of chocolate under the first tray/layer and surprised me.
3. NYC nail polish - Park AVE
I am actually really loving this new colour. It's more grey than the picture, but it's definitely a bit mauve too. It was only $3 at LD so I thought I would try it! It took 2 layers, but I think it was still a good purchase, since I probably won't actually wear it enough to invest in an higher-end version.
Disappointments!
1. Aussie 3 minute miracle
Both my sister and my friend loved this product, so when I saw it finally back in stock at London Drugs I grabbed it and ran! it was only $4 which was a plus. The packaging was a bit on the cheap side, as it didn't have a cap. It has one of those lip dispenser where you can only dispense the product by applying pressure on the tube (like the powerade bottles), so it wasn't inconvenient, but it was unusual. BUT the bottom line, the product didn't work. At first I thought I just had high expectations, but after trying it 3 times, I decided the product just doesn't pass. I just don't feel like my hair is a lot smoother, or softer, and it definitely didn't fix my frizz. I had long (really long), dyed hair. It frizzes at the end a bit and gets tangled easily, but other than that it's not very rough so perhaps that's why i didn't see a difference. However, I feel like I have to use a lot of the product for the same result as my regular conditioner, which is the ultimate deal breaker seeing as how it's supposed to be a deep conditioner. As much as I wanted to love this product, it failed for me.
2. Expensive textbooks!
University textbooks are expensive! I feel ilk they charge because they can! For the upcoming semester one of my required readings is from the book "The Philosopher's Way 3rd Edition". It sells for the lovely price of $140 + tax! I'm sure I can find a discount used copy, but perhaps instead of funding expensive space exploration programs worth billions of dollars to prove that Pluto isn't a planet (always will be to me, come on there's a sailor scout named after it!), maybe that money should be spent on, I don't know...public health, education, and reimbursing students to allow them to escape a future of repaying their student loan.
Hope you enjoyed my December favourites and disappointments. I enjoyed writing it to help save you money on things that don't work as well as the hype claims, but also give you ideas or point out products that you might pass by a lot in the drug store, but never tried out.
Have a great holiday!

French Manicure - DIY
Hello Everyone!
Manicures are expensive, especially trying to get that nice perfect french tip look. Keeping that in mind, over the years i've always done it myself. Here are a few tips to get that classic look.
1. Choosing the right product
Many nail polish brands make white nail polish for french manicures, so they'll have a narrower brush which helps a lot. I don't have a brand i'd recommend, currently i'm using Rimmel's french tip pro, but it chips really easily so I would not recommend it.
2. Doesn't have to be perfect
Chances are no one's staring at your nails for that long, so don't worry if your line it's perfectly even. Also often it depends on the angle you're viewing it from so if it's off by a bit, let it go.
3. Start thin
I'd recommend not putting too much product at first or it will smudge easily and look more like a blob, as well as not drying. Also, if you went back to cover an area again often you will see a crease or notice it bumps up. Don't worry about it! Once you put on your top coat, it will magically disappear.
4. When in doubt, tape
You can always put tape on your nail to make sure you get a nice straight even line. cut off a bit of tape and manoeuvre it so that it is in a nice crescent shape. Once you're satisfied with the form, put on the white polish and let it dry for one minute just so it sets. Then peel off the tape. This is really time consuming but eventually you won't really need it one you start practicing more.
5. Layer on the top coat!
After all that hard work, you want your mani to last! Take the time to layer on your top coat.
Hope that helps!

Affordable Holiday Gift Guide for Friends
The holidays are just around the corner, and if you're like me, the shopping list is only getting longer. I thought i'd share some of my ideas for gift for friends!
The Acquaintance
The girl who sat next to you all semester in English, or the friend of a really close friend who you know but not really that well. It can be pretty frustrating to find them a gift without breaking your budget! Deffinitely go with something cute and useful such as these cute beauty compact mirrors from forever 21 for only $3-4. Pair it with a candy cane and a cute holiday mug filled with jelly beans tied with a bow and you're set to go.
The Girl Friend
The girl you consider a close friend, but not within your inner circle can be tricky to shop for. Since you know her presumably quite well It can be hard to figure out what they don't have or what they want. Whatever her style, jewellery is a girl's best friend. These forever 21 studs sell for only $4-5 and the scarf for only $6-7. Affordable, and sure to let her rock the winter warm and in style.
The Guy Friend
It is so hard to find guys a present! This honestly depends on the guy's personality! For the IT guy, a cute usb is always useful and creative, while for the creative artsy guy a cute shirt always appreciate another cute shirt to add to their collection.
The Boyfriend
Probably the most difficult! It depends on how far your relationship is and mutual budget. Although deciding on a budget would be the muture thing to do, if you're like me you're most likely just going to guess. Here are some ideas for the 'tricky one'. Personally I would go on a personally level and make a cookie tin (the way into a man's heart is his stomach right?), a nice picture of you both or just a cute one of you framed with a cute picture frame. You don't even have to pay a lot for a cute frame; I have this really cute frame with two slots that spin from the dollar store! Add into your package something cute and wintery. I am making my boyfriend a pair of pj pants with some flannel fabric I thought was super cute (respond if you want me to show you how, or I might do it anyways). A scarf or mittens would work as well. Keep in mind this is a situational thing and this is just ideas I have based on my relationship with my current SO.
Hope you enjoyed reading my gift guide, feel free to let me know what ideas you have for this holiday!

Clinique - Even Better Makeup Foundation
I'm not a beauty product review or haul weblog even today it does certainly seem so, maybe because I haven't had time to bake or do anything much for that matter, but I do want to post something so I thought i'd stick to what I know. Originally I wanted to do a pro's and con's list but I thought explaining might actually be better.
I use the colour Cream Whip and I am of oriental ethnicity.
Clinique's website says "see improved clarity, a more even skin tone, visibly diminished age spots. For all ethnicities. In just 4 to 6 weeks." I actually don't see a huge difference in my skin tone to be honest. I really like the foundation formula, but I don't have age spots to begin with so I'm not sure if I can be a good judge of that.
It does have an SPF 15 which is awesome since I hate having to put on sun screen first, I find it always makes my face feel and smell funny.
It's also really easy to layer the coverage and I love that only a little can go a really long way! I've had my bottle for about 3 months and I put it on everyday and still have so much left! I know it can be a little pricey at $30 a bottle but I actually think it saved me money from having to buy a new bottle every other month.
A really important factor to foundation for me is how it feels on my skin and how it last. I use the formula for combination skins, on days that I don't put on moisturizer causing my skin to be more oily, the foundation doesn't sit as well. However, on days that I do (which is like 95%) it stays on fine and I don't have any problems with it feeling oily. Although it says it is suitable for all skin types, if you have oily skin perhaps try it out at the department store or at sephora first before purchasing (as I do with pretty much all products).
I actually really like the product, and I would definitely re-purchase it as my staple foundation product. -
My Experience With Oily - Dry Combination Skin
I used to think I had really oily skin and so I would do everything I could to try and basically 'dry it out'. However, as the years progressed I learnt that I actually had combination skin, both oily and dry. How does one recognize it? Well for me, my skin would be oily but also feel rough underneath. This apparently isn't the definition of combination skin, but I thought i'd use that title anyways. I used to think that blotting paper could just fix it, but it's not really good for your skin to keep taking off the oil it's producing to try and balance itself out. I also had problems with zits that came a long with the oil.
A lot of people actually have combination skin but not know it. Often products say its either for dry or oily skin, and rarely combination and thus it has led us to generalize our skin.
I have since then I think developed a routine that worked for me. This is my personal favourite to combat combination skin and may not work for you, but I thought I'd share some of these.
1. Face wash
Cleansing your face form all the oil dust and dirt that accumulate during the day is so important, especially if you wear makeup. If I don't wash my face over night, I always immediately regret it.
I use the Neutrogena oil free acne wash, the orange i guess classic one. This product has 2% Salic acid which is supposed to zap away the zits. However, it does dry out your skin, so moisturize afterwards!
2. Tone
I actually don't remember when, or why I started using toner, but ever since then I've been in love. I know a lot of people find toner necessary so whatever works for you, but if you're unsure, give it a go and then decide. I use the body shop tea tree oil toner. It's suppose to be for blemished and spotted skin. It works really well for me, but once again it's really to your own discretion.
3. Exfoliate
Exfoliating is so important to remove all the dead skin so new skin can come out. It's especially important for people with combination skin since you don't want that rough dry skin under the oil (which we had already addressed). Although exfoliation can irritate the face if you do it too much, so one a week or so it good. I really like the Garnier 3 in 1, it leaves your skin feeling really tingly and not dried out!
4. moisturize!!!!!!
A lot of times oily skin, or oily combination skin is due to the fact your face is dry! crazy right? turns out if your skin is feeling dry it will try to create more oil to compensate for that! If your skin feels nice and moisturized, it will stop doing that! Also moisturizing allows the skin to repair and rest. I like something soothing like the body shop's aloe day cream!
5. Battle Black Heads
This step is actually just a personal favourite, and a step towards cleaner, nicer skin. I like using nose strips like the biore ones. I know you can also make your own with gelatine, honey and such, but i haven't tried ( i will). Nose strips can be expensive though. Here in canada their about 10.00$ for a box of 6 at your local drug store. I get mine from hong kong from SaSa or Bonjour for about 3-5 HKD for a box of 10 (another reason I love hk shopping) so definitely see if you have family in asia who can pick them up for you and bring it back on their next visit. These work amazing, like it's unbelievable how much gunk you get out of your pores! Afterwards, I usually follow with some toner to clean up the area. A lot of people disagree on nose strips as some think you may have a reliance on it and your pores will get clogged more. Personally I don't think my pores are relying on it, rather i'm addicted to using to to make sure I have clear skin. Sometimes during my busy points of the year I won't use them and I don't see any break outs on my nose or anything so I'm not quite sure if that's a proven fact or myth.
Hope that was semi-interesting to read!
